Description

1864 Edward Bierstadt Artotype Print of Mathew Brady’s Civil War Union Generals + 8 – (Featuring Grant)

Mathew Brady photographed most of the pictures available today from the Civil War. Here is a Vintage 1864 Civil War Union Generals Brady artotype done by Edward Bierstadt. There are ten uniformed men pose under a tent canopy. Shown from the original are Generals Grant , and Badeau, Comstock and Custer(?). Also several Coronels including Duff and Parton. Dated 1864, with inscriptions describing the scene, people, photographer (Brady) and city.

Measuring 9.5×7 B&W print on paperstock has total dimensions of 14×12. This Civil War artotype is in excellent condition considering it’s age. The lower part of the border has about a 25% light water or age stain but doesn’t intrude on the famous men pictured. The lower and upper edge show aging and a couple 1″ tears although they are on the border and several inches from the actual photo. The artotype is original to the time period and has an embossed NY printers mark near the bottom right border. Classic bushy moustaches all around make this period specific vintage artotype easily identifiable.
