1914 Walter Johnson B18 Blanket
Out of stock
Hampered through much of his career with the decidedly marginal Senators, the great Walter Johnson persevered 21 seasons to claim over 400 mound victories – clearly the heart of the franchise for nearly a quarter century.
In 1914 as The Big Train was yet to reach his prime, he appeared in the tobacco insert series now known as B18 (American Tobacco Co. under the brand name “Egyptienne Straights”). Naturally, the Johnson blanket is among the headiest in the issue, and we now make this one available. Of the two color varieties of Johnson appearing in the issue, this one, with its green pennants, is a bit scarcer. In closer detail, we note that the piece is somewhat askew in its manufactured cut (characteristically the standard rather than the exception). As well, its white infield is very slightly toned. Much to its credit, however, the register is virtually perfect, there’s border at all four edges, and the meaningful colors (red basepaths with green bases and pennants) are fresh. There are no stains, and delightfully, there’s just a small trace of the original paper sealing remaining on the reverse. Ultimately, this one would be accepted in Excellent condition, at the least.
