Spalding Canvas & Leather Football Pants 1918 Game UsedGo Back
Here is a small piece of football history! On the auction block tonight is a pair of 1918 – 1922 Spalding canvas with leather thigh patched football pants used by Charles “DUKE” Freese when he played HS football in Wheeling West Virginia in 1918. He would later go on to play for the Tennessee Military Institute (1919 – 1921) and then the University of West Virginia in 1922. Written on the inside of the waist band is “CHAS FREESE WHEELING, WEST VA” dating these pants to his 1918 year of football. We are very lucky to acquire this piece from this documented players estate. The pants have lots of wear and game use abuse but overall condition is still pretty good. There are some holes and staining but nothing over the top (see all photos). All 4 of the leather thigh pad patches are firmly attached. One of them has a little more wear than the other three. Both of the original thigh pads are still present (see photos). Both have the wool padding still attached. One of them has some edge damage and both of them are very stiff and do not flex. They do fit into the inside pockets as seen in photo #1. There is a very cool circa 1914 – 1920’s Spalding makers tag sewn onto the inner waist line. Written on the back side of the pants is DUKE and DUKE FREESE (see photos 5 and 6). Here are the measurement: WAIST– 29″, INSEAM – 18″, TOP TO BOTTOM – 26″. This documented player’s 1918 Spalding football pants will look killer displayed in your home, office, sports room, etc! They will make a great addition to anyone’s sports collection!
