The Yankees have had ten pitchers throw eleven no-hitters in franchise history. Three perfect games, a special subcategory of no-hitter, have been pitched in Yankees history. As defined by Major League Baseball, “in a perfect game, no batter reaches any base during the course of the game.” This feat was achieved by Don Larsen in 1956, David Wells in 1998, and David Cone in 1999. Wells later claimed he was a “little hung-over” while throwing his perfect game.
Now, here comes the best part. Here as a one-of-a-kind collectible direct from the house that Ruth built, the attached fold up style chair anchored to a blue Yankees home plate base is numbered “18”. Some notable Yankees who wore that number include pitching greats Whitey Ford and Don Larsen.
What makes this important is that all of the Yankees perfect game pitchers and catchers in the history of the team autographed it. Yes, all the perfect game pitchers and catchers with the majority who inscribed their personal moment in Yankees lore. The seat is original with no damage or deterioration to any of the hardware. It does have natural weathering with both blue and visible green paint in worn areas from the days of Mickey Mantle in the outfield. The wingspan measures 23″ across with a height of 33″.
It took several decades to amass this compilation of autographs on this chair but diligence proved otherwise and that it’s possible. Signers in blue or black felt tip (“9-10”) include: Don Larsen “10.8.56” and Yogi Berra on the main numbered backing piece, second rung features David Wells “P.G. 5.17.98” and Jorge Posada, and the third panel showcases David Cone “P.G. 7.18.99” and Joe Girardi “7/18/99”.
