Game 2 of the 1923 World Series witnessed the harbinger of Yankee greatness. The New York Americans had claimed two pennants in their brief history, but they hadn’t yet donned the glad rags of a world championship. They bowed to the mighty McGraws in the first game of this series, but the colossal Ruth captured the day in the second tilt, and essentially authored the standard that has remained the Yankee character ever since. One fan in attendance for Game 2 thrilled to the Babe’s fourth-inning home run. And then, in the following frame, Ruth belted another one. (In the cavernous Polo Grounds, his most sensational shot, however, came in the 9th inning, but it resulted in a fly-out to centerfielder, Casey Stengel.) In any event, that customer got his money’s worth – all $3.30 of it – for a preferred berth in the upper grand stand, no less. We know this because we’ve got his (perhaps her) ticket stub. It has survived these many years to be recently authenticated by PSA, as well. The stub’s only meaningful qualification is a piece of transparent adhesive tape applied in the upper aspect. Otherwise, the memento is fresh with acceptably preserved corners, no creases, and an unviolated perforation.
