Description

The 1928 W565 trading card set was originally printed on two separate 7″ by 10-1/2″ sheets, one on black-and-white and one on red-and-white. The 50-card set primarily focused on movie stars, but also held a handful of baseball players and boxers. When cut from the cheap cardboard sheets, each card measured 1-1/4″ by 2-1/8″ with backs printed in navy blue. The fronts displayed a washed out shadow of a player photograph with his name and team printed in a rectangular box at the bottom. The reddish-pink or grayish backgrounds are bordered by a deeper red or black edge, respectively.

The Yankees came calling in 1923 when, in mid-April, Lou Gehrig struck out 17 Williams College batters and eight days later hit two monstrous home runs with Yankees scout Paul Krichell in attendance. Lou signed with the Yanks in 1923, foregoing his final time at Columbia, and was shipped to the Hartford Senators where he hit .304 with 24 home runs in only 59 games.

Presented is a 1928 W565 Lou Gehrig Card (hand cut) card.  It was encapsulated and graded by PSA VG 3.
