1931 “Notre Dame National Champions” Letter Holder
Out of stock
We must imagine that this memento was offered in Notre Dame’s souvenir store in 1931, following their declared college championship of the previous season. It’s a standard-sized letter holder fashioned from a single sheet of copper alloy. The face, measuring 3 1/2″ x 6″, projects a small portrait image of Coach Knute Rockne along with simulated autographs of the Fighting Irish football squad – all in shallow relief and imposed on the image of a pigskin. Indeed, Notre Dame went undefeated in 1930 (against tough opposition), trouncing Southern Cal, 27-0, in their schedule’s finale. Materially, this piece is strong and, if so desired, perfectly functional. The condition of the imaged detail, though, is about VG/EX due to sporadic surface blemishes and moderate oxidation.
