Description

This red and blue-stitched, moderately toned ball served to accept the autographs of 12 Yankees in 1931. The sphere is an Official Taylor Official League , and we determine its vintage by the inclusion of Jimmie Reese and Joe Sewell, whose only season as teammates was ’31. Most noteworthy on this ball, aside from its demonstration of Yankee might, is the placement of the signatures. Babe Ruth inked the sweet spot (“7-8/10”) while Lou Grehig (“8/9”) opted for (or was relegated to) a side panel. The remaining itemize – Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, and Joe Sewell 3 HOFers. Other notables are Lyn Lary, Ed Wells, Dusty Cooke, Jimmie Reese, Hank Johnson, Lou McEvoy  and Lefty Weinert.  The presence of Ruth and Gehrig – especially in this orientation – is unusual, and a welcomed delight for many collectors. However, we care to underscore a couple others on this ball. Jimmie Reese was a marginal ballplayer and, for his brief tenure with New York, he was Ruth’s roommate. Reese admired the Babe with the fullest reverence, and Ruth (perhaps a bit sympathetic toward Jimmie’s measured talent) always acknowledged Reese with sincerest respect. By the way, Reese was still the major league’s best fungo hitter at age 93. Another figure of note is Joe Sewell. Joe plied most of his career in Cleveland, where he was a mere rookie in that team’s 1920 World Series victory. His signal ability, however, was contact. His 12-year career was defined by over 7000 official at-bats through which he registered a lifetime .312 – with a grand total of 114 strikeouts – that’s why he’s in the Hall of Fame. Indeed, Ruth and Gehrig are on this ball, but even with only 12 signatures, there’s a wonderful yarn of history here.
