Description
Among the most prolific card producers of the 1930s and ’40s was the English tobacco packager, John Player & Son. It would seem that the company long maintained a specialist staff to devise, ultimately, a bewildering array of subject matter over the years. In 1936, Player inserted cards providing instruction in tennis. There were 50 different images, yielded in flesh tones with pronounced green backgrounds, illustrating all the facets of the game. And to enhance consumer interest, each of these cards featured meaningful tennis stars. All the cards in this 50-card set are characterized by pristinely white borders and crisp corners to average Near Mint. We note, however, a few mild departures from the ideal in #’s 3, 4 and 49 which are about VG.
