1938 Minneapolis Millers Team-Signed Photo (11) Ted Williams, etc. – COA JSAGo Back
Several baseball teams went by the nickname Millers, but the most prominent of these was the team in the American Association from 1902 to 1960. The Millers won four Association pennants during the 1910–23 tenure of “Pongo Joe” Cantillon, then were managed from 1924–31 by another legend, Michael Joseph Kelley, one of the great figures of American Association history. Kelley operated the team as club president until 1946. Broadcaster Halsey Hall was the Millers’ play-by-play man from 1933 until the club folded in 1960 to make way for the Minnesota Twins.
Ted Williams, Willie Mays, and Carl Yastrzemski were among some future major leaguers who played for the Millers. The Millers won nine pennants in the Association during their fifty-nine years.
Presented is a scarce 1938 Minneapolis Millers’ team-signed 8×10 photograph. The highlight was that it was autographed by Ted Williams who was 20 years old at the time as well as 10 other team members (11 total autographs). The photo shows aging, surface wear, and slight imperfections.
Saddled with a youthful temper to match his tremendous skills, Williams became famous in Minneapolis for his outbursts, once shattering a glass water cooler with his fist after popping out, giving his teammates an early shower, and almost ending his career when a shard of glass barely missed a nerve in his hand.
This black and white dandy is an original team photo issued for “Radio Appreciation Day” at Minneapolis’ Nicollet Park, establishing this as among the earliest Williams signed baseball images in the hobby. Other signers in blue pen (“8”) include Harry Taylor; Walt Tauscher; Otto Denning; Belve Bean; Ken Richardson; Lefty LeFebvre; Roy Pfleger; Andy Cohen; Alta Cohen and Fabian Gaffke.
