1938 N. Y. Yankees Team Signed Ball (DiMaggio and Sweet Spot Gehrig)

Out of stock

SKU: 33513 Category:

The hobbyist seeking a pre-eminent 1938 Yankee team-signed ball must consider strongly this opportunity. The medium is an unofficial ball, but it warrants closer detail. It’s a quality Spalding that cites the blossoming megastar, Joe DiMaggio, as his simulated autograph appears on the stamped sweet spot. The surface is mildly (but uniformly) toned – which is really a virtuous feature that lends a vintage essence to the ball, while not impairing the crisp distinction of the signatures. By 1938, the reigning sovereign of Yankee might was still Lou Gehrig. An unwilling hero he was through his entire career – but he consented to sign the sweet spot of this ball, and his signature stands alone on that exclusively reserved surface. As is apparent in our photograph for this listing, a minute abrasion appears on this baseball’s sweet spot which encroaches the Gehrig autograph. There are 23 signatures on this ball, and we qualify that PSA/DNA has declared that two of them (Gomez and Dickey) are of the “clubhouse” variety. Specifically, there are included here – trong>Red Ruffing, Johnny Murphy, trong>Joe DiMaggio (“7”, signed as he commonly did in his early career, “J. DiMaggio”), Joe Glenn, Babe Dahlgren, Monte Pearson, Jake Powell, George Selkirk, Spud Chandler, Bill Knickerbocker, Tommy Henrich, Myril Hoag, Paul [Ivy] Andrews, Red Rolfe, Frank Crosetti, Bump Hadley, Steve Sundra, Paul Schreiber (rarely actually rostered, but always present and available), Joe Beggs (isolating the vintage of this signing), Joe Gordon and, of course, the sweet spot signing of trong>Lou Gehrig (“3”).
