Longevity was Gus Mancuso’s calling card. The catcher with a rifle arm and ability to manage a pitching staff like few others, lasted 17 seasons in the big leagues. The two-time All Star put heavy use into the offered Wilson model GM (personal model) catcher’s mitt. According to noted glove expert Denny Esken, use of this glove can be traced to 1941, when Mancuso played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Mancuso’s tool of trade shows heavy use and has been oiled. A deep set pocket suggests Mancuso used the mitt for awhile. Athletic tape has reinforced the upper webbing. Many catchers favored this method in the 1940s and earlier. The Wilson label has deteriorated and is missing. A fine, vintage gamer from one of the most noteworthy catchers of his time period.
