Description

Barney Brown was one of the best left-handed hurlers in the Negro National League. The slick southpaw was a leading pitcher during the late 1930s and 40s  with great control, an awesome screwball and tremendous competitive spirit. He pitched in five East-West All-Star games in four years, appearing in both games played in 1946. He began his professional career in 1931 and, before joining the (New York) Black Yankees, played with the C ub an Stars of the East-West League in 1932.

Brown spent his winters in Latin America and led the Puerto Rican League in victories twice (1941-42 and 1946-47). In his latter year he won 16 games and had a low ERA of 1.24 for San Juan. He was also good at the plate hitting wise with resonable power and a high walk ratio. He was the best pitcher in Mexico in 1941, with a record of 19-4, and after finishing the season he pitched for Guayama in the Puerto Rican winter league.

Presented is his rare winter baseball “Liga Semi-Professional de Baseball de Puerto Rico” two-page contract signed (on back of first page) by Brown on August 2, 1941. He was the victory leader that season for Guayma!

Interestingly, baseball player / amateur boxing champ, Quincy Trouppe also signed the contract as a witness. He started his career in the Negro Leagues from 1930-49 as a catcher. He also made an apperance with the Cleveland Indians in 1952. At the time, he was one of the oldest rookies to take the field at Shibe Park at 39.
