1945 Negro Leagues Yearbook

Out of stock

SKU: 31674 Category:

The big story in this annual was the Negro Leagues’ 1944 World Series that featured the mighty Homestead Grays against the Birmingham Black Barons. And though Homestead rostered outstanding offense in Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell and Josh Gibson, it was the team’s mound work – Roy Welmaker, in particular – that carried the series. (For that matter, the cover of this yearbook spotlighted Spoon Carter – another Grays star hurler.) This publication likely appeared in the spring of 1945 as is evidenced by the modified tableau (page 15) of the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima. The surface of the cover is splendidly clean and with no creasing, but the top border of the entire volume (32 pages) has been trimmed (now 8-1/2″ x 11″). The spine is acceptably undamaged, but some of the internal pages are detached. Ultimately, this Negro Baseball Year Book is in apparent EX condition.
