1948 Boston Braves Team Photo

This period photo print glories the pennant-winning Boston Braves of 1948. The catch-phrase identifying the team was “Spahn, then Sain, then pray for rain.” In truth, Johnny Sain (with exceptional help from Vern Bickford) was the mound ace that year while Spahn earned only polite applause with a 15-12 record. For those Braves, in fact, the pennant was sealed on the strength of abnormal batsmenship – Holmes, Alvin Dark, Stanky and Jeff Heath all performed well beyond their inherent aptitudes. (Two years later, the unexpected Phillies earned the dubious title, “Whiz Kids”, but indeed these Braves claimed the 1948 flag, seemingly with smoke and mirrors.) All that aside, this is a marvelous photograph. Discretely matted and framed to a conspicuous 24 1/2″ x 17 1/4″. For the exposed surface, the piece is EX/MT and it provides captioned identities for this unusual squad.
