1948 Detroit Tigers Autographed OAL Ball

Out of stock

SKU: 18087 Category:

31 signatures, all minimally “8” in strength and rendered in black fountain pen, fully representing the Detroit Tigers roster of 1948. Though the stampings are now faded, we’re able to discern that the medium is, indeed, an official American League ball (and therefore, of the Harridge variety). It’s a near certainty the ball was signed in Spring Training as it includes Marlin Stuart who didn’t make that season’s final cut (but who debuted with the Tigers in ’49). We also note the inclusion of Johnny Bero (who briefly appeared in Detroit in 1948), and rookie sensation, Billy Pierce who was shortly thereafter dealt to the White Sox – thus affirming the vintage. As should be expected, there are a couple Hall of Famers on this ball, but we’re most impressed with the fine (“7-8”) autograph of Fred Hutchinson. Steve O’Neill and Hal Newhouser share the sweetspot, plus: Joe Ginsberg, Bob Swift, Art Houtteman, Ted Gray, George Vico, Art Mills, Pat Mullin, Vic Wertz, Lou Kretlow, Paul Campbell, Roger Cramer, Ted Lyons (“6”), Johnny Lipon, Eddie Mayo, Dick Wakefield, Stub Overmire, Hal White, Neil Berry, Johnny Groth, George Kell (“8”), Virgil Trucks, Bill Sweeney, Jimmy Outlaw, Dizzy Trout and Red Rolfe.
