This 1949 Red Sox Flannel jersey was gifted to the consignor when he was young man around this era by Ted Williams. The jersey has been kept safe in a closet just outside of the Boston area until now.
The flannel is definitely worn and is of the era, and may be attributed to Ted Williams based on the identifiers and the recollection of the consignor. This style of Boston Red Sox creme-colored flannel was also used for the Minor Leagues as well, during this era. The wool is the color of cream, and it’s soft to the touch. The hand-stitched letters on the front, the number on the back, and the piping are still fire-engine red and show wear.
The jersey is a Red Sox button flannel (7). It has red piping around the sleeves and the collar. Part of the piping around the collar has become unstitched. “RED SOX” is sewn onto the front of the jersey with thick red felt letters and blue piping. “9” is sewn onto the back of the jersey in red thick felt and blue piping.
There is a year tag on the interior tail of the jersey with a felt swatch and “49” stitched into it, dating the year of the jersey to the 1949 season. The jersey tagging is correct in the collar. Tim McAuliffe tagging upon review has a newer appearance indicating that the tag was resewn in at some point. This was not uncommon. Wilson tagging in the collar is sewn in side by side. We can determine the tags were removed and then resewn on evident by the stitching that appears on the back part of the jersey around the collar. The original seamstress Helen Robinson, was contacted and confirmed that they did resew back on tags in collars and restitch on the numerals and anything else that needed to be fixed on the flannels. We can not determine when or why this was done.
“46” size flag tag is also sewn into the Wilson tag on the interior collar. The size 46 would be a size that Williams could have worn during that time period. When you measure the jersey across the chest, it seems to have had shrinkage as it measures to just under 23 inches.
Note that there is a Name Tag swatch tag that should be found in the collar of the jersey during this era. This Player Identifier is NOT present in the collar of the jersey. However, Ted Williams signed the jersey in the place of the player identifier and Ted Williams also signed the jersey on the interior inside seam of the jersey.
Although the vintage 1949 flannel has alterations, it is an outstanding find. The jersey itself is a FABULOUS representation of Boston Red Sox gamer from the Late 40’s Early 50’s era. Tough to even find this style of jersey on the market. The jersey has been signed twice by Ted Williams and he signed it for the original owner as it was gifted to him by Ted Williams.
Any jersey relating to Ted Williams, from the 1949 season, even a no-name Boston Red Sox gamer, is very rare, has already been found, sold before or put into the Hall of Fame.
