The mask is a 1950s pro model and was made by Spalding exclusively for Berra. It features his name “Yogi Berra” and the model number “1514” stamped on the rear leather head strap. It was signed by the Hall of Famer in blue felt tip on the back side.
The complete unit is comprised of a black cast-iron face mask and interior leather padding. An elastic strap, with adjustable leather fasteners, is attached to the rear leather head strap. It showcases evidence of great use throughout including soiling and wear to the leather padding, stress marks on the strap, and battle marks on the front.
Bob Case provides the game use authentication on this mask. He worked in the visitor’s clubhouse for the L.A. Angels from 1962-65 relayed in handwritten letter that he is familiar with Yogi Berra masks. This one was exactly like the one he got from Pete (Sheehy).
I am writing this letter to inform you the Yogi Berra Mask you have in your possession is 100% real and is especially like the one Pete Sheehy gave me in 1974 when the Yankees were playing in Shea Stadium. I hope your customer enjoys and knows the mask is 100% Authentic and was made for Yogi. God Bless, Sincerley Your Pal Bob Case – Los Angeles Angels 1962-65 – Casey Stengal Bus. Mgr. 1965-75
Also included for authentication is a letter of authentication from J.T. Sports and it reads:
Spalding professional model catcher’s mask displays evidence of outstanding use. The cast iron frame shows heavy wear on the double bar face guard and chin. The face pad is well worn with considerable toning from perspiration. Berra has autographed the chin in silver paint pen.
The face pad harness is constructed of soft leather bound with rawhide laces. The head straps are connected to the harness with leather strip buckles. Branded on the leather head strap is the model of the face mask 1514 and Yogi Berra.
Attached to this letter of authenticity is a photograph of Berra circa 1959 wearing a mask that though not a photo match is a confirmed model match. The Berra model was a popular catcher’s mask that was available to the major and minor leagues as well as retail market.
After a thorough examination of this Yogi Berra professional model catcher’s mask, it is our opinion the mask is authentic as described. This Letter of Authenticity and opinion are that of JT Sports and not PSA/DNA.
A copy of a provenance letter is also included from the owner as he obtained the mask in the mid 1980s. He had a store in Rochester, NY (Joe’s Sports Cards). The collector came to my store and I bought all the equipment he had. The mask was among the equipment.
The key part of the letter reads: I have always believed this mask to have been worn by Yogi Berra. I took this mask to get signed by Yogi Berra. Upon me showing him the mask, he hesitated, looked at me, and looked the mask over. For a moment, I did not think he was going to sign it. I have kept this mask since the 1980’s in box. I have not taken it out since I have offered it to the public for sale.
Authentication: Game use authentication letter from Bob Case. JSA Auction House Letter for Autograph, JT Sports LOA and Provenance Letter (copy).
