When this team photo was taken, there were two weeks remaining in the Junior Circuit’s regular ’51 season. The Indians held an edge over the unrelenting Yankees, but Cleveland seemed destined to claim the pennant. Presently, the bottom fell out, though, as the Tribe dropped seven of ten contests (two of them to the detested New Yorks), while the Yankees romped to an eleven-three record over the same period, thereby taking the American League crown. Meanwhile, as the Indians posed for this team photo, under the orchestration of International News Photos, spirits were high and glory on Lake Erie seemed imminent. The photograph, a standard 9" x 7", is superlative in every consideration. There are no surface blemishes, the corners are crisp, the lighting is ideal, and the focus is unimpeachable as even casual Indians fans may readily identify most of these diamond celebrities. And what a star-studded crew this was…with such stars destined for Cooperstown as Bob Lemon, Larry Doby, Al Lopez, Bob Feller, Early Wynn, and coach Red Ruffing. And not to be ignored in this image are the thrilling performers Bobby Avila, Al Rosen, and Mike Garcia. Great heritage, great roster, and a great photograph – complete with its news caption affixed to the reverse.
