August 4, 1953 – Williams in Pinch Hitting Role – Ted Williams, making his first appearance since his return from the Armed Forces, pops out as a pinch hiter in the ninth inning of the game here today against the St. Louis Browns. Clint Courtney, Brown catcher and Umpire Bill Summers watch the pop up. Ted walked dejectedly to the bench as the crowd gave him a standing cheer. St. Louis defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-7 in ten innings.
