Description
Del Rice was a baseball lifer, having played 17 seasons in the bigs, then coaching for six years and managing at the Major League level before becoming a career scout for the Angels. The longest term of his playing career was spent with the St. Louis Cardinals where he was the regular backstop from 1947 through ’53.
This rare home flannel traces to the 1953 season when he honored with his sole selection on the Senior Circuit’s All-Star squad. The off-white flannel features a zip-up front with red braid piping encircling the sleeves, collar and zipper path. The Cardinals famed chenille logo (of the early ‘50s) adorns the front while Rice’s #18, in slightly faded red felt with navy trim, graces the verso.
The inner collar bears a period black Rawlings label sewn in tandem with a size “44” label. The lower left front tail has a red chain link identifier reading “Del Rice 53xx,” linking the jersey to Rice for the 1953 season with double-extra length. On the tail’s interior is a dry cleaning label. The zipper is fully functional. The jersey has minor verso staining with back numeral fading…but overall, it remains in fine condition.
