Description

That it’s a Brooklyn Dodger team-signed ball is forgone. That it dates to the 1954 season is, in turn, conclusive in that one-year Bum, Pete Wojey, signed it. Now, there are 26 signatures about the surface of this ball, and we concede that several of them are clubhouse surrogates (howsoever, rather convincing) – specifically, those of Jim Gilliam, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese, Rube Walker, Erv Palica, Johnny Podres, Gil Hodges and Carl Furillo. Conversely, it bears genuine signatures of the principals, pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>Jackie Robinson (“pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>8”), pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>Walt Alston (“pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>8”, sweet spot) and pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>Roy Campanella (“pan style=”font-weight: bold;”>7-8”). The medium is a mildly (and uniformly) toned Dodger souvenir ball (MacGregor). And the balance of the autographs – all of them deviating little from “8” in quality – is composed of Don Newcombe, Bob Darnell, Don Zimmer, Preacher Roe, Russ Meyer, Walt Moryn, Jim Hughes, Don Hoak, Clem Labine, Sandy Amoros, Billy Cox, Carl Erskine, George Shuba and Billy Loes.
