1954 New York Giants World Series Press Pin

The subdued imagery of this press pin belies the exhilarating excitement it congers in the history of World Series play. The sportswriter who wore this piece witnessed one of the Fall Classic’s greatest memories as the incomparable Willie Mays dazzled fans (and the nation, for that matter) with "The Catch." It happened in the 8th inning of Game 1 (played in the cavernous Polo Grounds), and in a full-stride sprint with his back to the flight of the ball, Mays caught a towering drive off the bat of Cleveland’s Vic Wertz. (Keeping his wits in perspective, Mays instantly fired the ball back to the infield to halt Doby’s scoring the go-ahead run.) This was an incredible World Series – the Giants were heavy underdogs to the Indians who had claimed 111 regular season victories. (The Giants swept the Series and savored what has amounted to their last such triumph…to date.) The matter at hand, however, is this ’54 Giants press pin. The piece was produced by Dieges & Clust, and it was made without the benefit of plating. The metallic surfaces in this species are therefore always tarnished to some degree. In this particular pin, we report only a mild degree of such tarnish; the enamel is perfect (the white is thorough and pure), and the pin is attended by its original nut – all of which yields this little gem Near Mint.
