Description

The 1955 Topps Baseball set consists of 206 cards, each measuring 2-5/8″ by 3-3/4”. Numerically the smallest Topps issue, the 1955 presentation was originally meant to total 210 cards, but card #s 175, 186, 203, and 209 were never produced. The redesigned set marked the first use of a horizontal format for player depictions through the entire production run.

Unchanged by Topps was the two-image design, with every player depicted in a portrait and an action illustration, and sharing space with a colorful team logo. Due to its comparatively small complement, the series presents as being packed with mid-1950s baseball talent, including Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Al Kaline, Jackie Robinson, Warren Spahn and Ted Williams being among the “Low Numbers.”

“High Numbers” featured the likes of Yogi Berra, Gil Hodges, Willie Mays, Phil Rizzuto, and Duke Snider. Not to be overlooked were rookie classmates Roberto Clemente (a scarce “High Number” exemplar), Harmon Killebrew, and Sandy Koufax.

As had been true of earlier releases, all the 1955 Topps “High Numbers,” – #s 161 to 210 – prove more challenging. Similar scarce, to some extent, are #s 151-160, meaning that Mays, Berra or Snider are often more scarce than Williams, Robinson or Aaron. The first card of Harry Agganis (#152), picturing the young Red Sox standout who passed away suddenly in June 1955, just prior to achieving true stardom, is also harder to find, and is as close to a “rarity” as the set offered.

Presented is a complete 1955 Topps baseball set 206/206. The cards are in lower grade starter set grade condition with some better than others. There is also a few duplicates. See photos for condition assessment. The highlight rookie card of the set is the great HOF pitcher Sandy Koufax and his card #123 was encapsulated and graded by SGC 1.5 PR (Poor). Also to note, the Roberto Clemente rookie card #164 is authentic but altered by corner recoloration on the top left. However, the overall the set would be a tremendous addition to any early Topps baseball card enthusiast.
