1958 San Francisco Giants Team-Signed Ball (w/Mays and ROY Orlando Cepeda on Sweet Spot)

Baseball’s great upheaval of migration in 1958 was headlined by the Dodgers in their exodus from Brooklyn. But in fact, it was the New York Giants who first announced their intent to move to the West Coast. It’s from that threshold season that this team-signed ball traces – the 26 signatures appearing on the EX/MT ONL (Giles) ball equate to that roster which opened in San Francisco’s Seals Stadium to commence the 1958 campaign. We note that manager Bill Rigney’s signature appears on the sweet spot, however, it’s been deemed a stamping. Co-featured on this prime surface, though, is the penning of that year’s National League Rookie of the Year, Orlando Cepeda. And though some of these inkings are a bit weak (overall, they average about “5-6”), they’re yet legible in their entirety. Specifically, there are included here: Felipe Alou (another sensational rookie), Johnny Antonelli, Eddie Bressoud, trong>Orlando Cepeda, Jim Davenport, Jim Finigan, Paul Giel, Ruben Gomez, Marv Grissom, Ray Jablonski, Jim King, Whitey Lockman, trong>Willie Mays (“6”), Mike McCormick, Stu Miller, Ray Monzant, Danny O’Connell, Hank Sauer, Bob Schmidt, Joe Shipley, Bob Speake, Daryl Spencer, Don Taussig (’58 was his only season with the Giants, thus isolating the vintage of this ball’s signing), Nick Testa, Valmy Thomas, and Al Worthington.
