Significant and poignant document relating to the life and career of Hall of Famer Larry Doby, a power-hitting centerfielder tutored by Tris Speaker and the first African-American to play in the American League. Doby was a Negro Leagues star with the Newark Eagles who joined the Indians in 1948 and promptly helped lead them to their first World Championship since 1920. The seven-time All-Star would finish his Major League career with Bill Veeck’s White Sox and this “Uniform Player’s Contract” details the terms of Lawrence E. Doby’s assignment by Veeck to the San Diego PCL club under the direction of Ralph Kiner. Dated August 1st, 1959, it’s verified and signed in ink by both Hall of Famers Veeck and Kiner. Hall of Famer contracts are extremely desirable and by definition, unique instruments and entities. Contract and signatures are NrMt.
