1960 Cleveland Indians Home Pinstripe Flannel Jersey Attributed to Harvey Kuenn (1960) or Rocky Colavito (’59)

Cleveland Indians’ home pinstripe jerseys from the 1958-62 period are esteemed among the most attractive styles of the modern flannel era. The 3-½” oversized block team nickname in red-on-navy canvas, coupled with sleeve numerals and the Chief Wahoo patch, made a bold fashion statement that has long been revered. This jersey traces to the 1960 season and perhaps the 1959 season, as well. With certainty, it was worn by Harvey Kuenn during the 1960s. Kuenn wore #6 upon arriving in the mega trade which brought him to the tribe from Detroit in exchange for Rocky Colavito. All the identifiers are original and intact, as is the Wilson size 44 tail label. The collar shows two sets of stitch remnants which once held the year swatch. The 1960 year swatch (which accompanies the jersey in a disengaged state) was removed from the collar by the original owner, and sewn in the tail and then removed. Hence, identical stitch remnants are present in the tail beneath the Wilson label. Upon inspection, the inner collar reveals two sets of almost identically shaped year swatches. Given that the jersey shows extensive wear and that the felt year swatch was flaccid (subject to material degradation and disengagement), it stands to reason that since the jersey style was identical in ’59 and ’60, perhaps the collar once bore a ’59 year swatch and then a ’60 swatch. For sure, it housed the ’60 which is still present, though detached. Overall, an incomplete Cleveland home pinstripe flannel from ’60, perhaps ’59, used by Harvey Kuenn in ’60 and possibly by the other principal in that famous trade, Rocky Colavito.
