It will be a long time before another left-handed pitcher approaches 363 wins. Rest easy, Warren Spahn, your place in history is secure.
This XPG Rawlings customized glove was made specifically for Hall of Fame Braves’ hurler and he used it in the later period of his career – probably in 1964 or ’65. According to noted glove expert Dennis Esken, this unique (prototype) glove was custom-made for Spahn and was designed from a ’50s pattern.
The glove was preserved in bronze after Spahnie retired it. Crafted with a deep-well pocket, this relic has a V-anchored web, favored by pitchers in that era. Closer details note that the glove is 100% nylon-sewn (engraved thumb) and it has spiral lacing on the top. According to Esken, a recently offered Spahn game-used glove (which wasn’t bronzed) realized about $10,000.
Similar to the Stan Musial glove (available elsewhere in this catalog), Spahn gifted this treasure to contemporary Cubs broadcaster Jack Quinlan. Celebrate pitching greatness with this glove from the incomparable southpaw. A letter signed by Quinlan’s son will attend.
