SKU: 13059 Category:

There’s history galore in this vintage 1962 Lions’ helmet worn by the inimitable character and stalwart defensive tackle. Its allure ranges from the unusual Wilson helmet styling, to a fantastic ’62 Thanksgiving game photomatch, to its physical survival as a keepsake and display piece at the notorious Lindell Athletic Club, one of America’s first true sports bars, and owned in part by Karras. (The club later made national headlines via the infamous Billy Martin–Dave Boswell brawl). A 1962 investigation into the club’s reputed gambling interests and ties to underworld heavyweights cost Karras his 1963 NFL season, so this helmet represents the end of his early career in 1962. The Wilson “etholite” bubble-eared helmet was first used by Karras because he didn’t like Riddell’s fit and his brother Ted wore Wilson with the Chicago Bears. The style F2102 in 7 3/8” – 7 1/2” is correct, and features vintage full leather interior padding, with an original cream colored snubber. One jaw pad is missing, but the other remains, and Karras’ bold number “71” is painted in the crown. The thin royal blue Lions’ logos originally supplied by a local Detroit area print shop are beaten up but stand stoically over the bubble ears. Of note are the widely placed stripes; positioning which had nothing to do with making a fashion or design statement. The spacing simply made them easier for replacement without removing the mask… and speaking of the face guard, the helmet bears an original Schutt bolt on mask (heavily gashed) with original screws.

A whiff of the interior confirms the provenance, as the helmet spent years in the smokey confines of the Lindell AC monitoring the over/unders and spread changes. It originates from owner Jimmy Butikaros, who was “Alex the Greek’s” partner in the enterprise. It survives as a glorious relic from the trenches of Tiger Stadium and the career of Lion lifer, Alex Karras. Definitive photo-match included.
