As mutually complementing adjuncts, Shea Stadium and the New York World’s Fair appeared on the same horizon in 1964. The newly expanded Mets franchise had taken temporary quarters in the ancient Polo Grounds for their first two campaigns, and the time was nigh for their re-invention. Thus gave birth to the state-of-the-art facility in Flushing Meadows, and with that grand opening was dispensed this inaugural New York Mets yearbook. Collectors appreciating the finest in historic publications will relish in this one. Only the closest scrutiny divulges mild oxidation on the binding staples and a narrow section of very light toning appears across the bottom edge of the cover. This is otherwise a splendidly preserved memento. The predominently white surface of the cover is utterly pure (qualified only by the aforementioned toning). Willard Mullin, as should be hoped, was tasked to provide the artistry – which he effected in his unique aptitude. The pages are pure and solidly bound, and the spine is absolutely faultless – This ’64 Mets yearbook is NM/MT.
