Description
Unusually scarce for their vintage are these 1964 Topps Beatles Plaks. There are 23 different in this collection, and all of them have been PSA encapsulated to merit very high marks. Despite the Beatlemania rage of the ’60s (an the consequent cascade of standard-sized trading cards), the consumer market was evidently resistent in accepting these "Plaks." They are dimensionally unwieldy (2-1/2" x 4-3/4" – a la Topps’ "tall boys" in hockey and basketball issues in the 1960s). Furthermore, their engineering was a contrivance of perforations and die-cuts which was simply too much for the junior hobbyist of the era. Ultimately, Beatles "Plaks" were a test issue that never made it to universal distribution…hence, their very limited numbers for today’s non-sport collector. There were 55 different cards in the short-lived production and this group, therefore, constitutes about 40% of a complete set.
Detailed, these are: PSA NM-MT 8 (nineteen cards, with no qualifiers) – #’s 16, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36, 38, 42, 43, 45, and 53. PSA NM 7 (four cards, with no qualifiers) – #’s 37, 39, 46, and 49.
