1965-68 Roger Maris Game-Used Bat, PSA GU 8.5

All this home run talk has brought Roger Maris’ name back to the forefront. It seemed like Maris was a forgotten man before Mark McGwire chased down his single-season home run record. Now Maris is getting more and more attention for being the record-holder given the steroid allegations which swirl around Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds. Maris still enjoys a cult following. Part of the allure of him is that his chase of Babe Ruth was more of a chore than anything else. Fans wanted their beloved hero Mickey Mantle to run down the great Babe, not the quiet and unassuming Maris. After Maris escaped the Big Apple he landed in St. Louis where he concluded his career. This Louisville Slugger model A92 bat (35″ and 33.2 ounces) was brandished by Maris between 1965-68, when he helped push the Cardinals over the top. The uncracked stick has definitely earned its lofty grade of PSA and MEARS 8.5 with ball marks on the right and left barrel. Red and blue bat rack marks are visible on the barrel. “9” is written on the knob which also has A92 stamped. A few cleat marks are still evident on the left barrel. There is a marking “M” atop the stampings on the barrel which may have been an autograph but this is undecipherable now. A legendary bat from one of baseball’s most unforgettable sluggers.
