Back in the day, the AFL was a powerhouse that certainly changed the engine of playing football. They essentially took the NFL gound and pound philosophy away by opening up the playbook and adding dimension to the field. This concept sounds familiar to how the modern day game is played but perhaps it is a mere flashback.
Nonetheless, the Oakland Raiders were part of that engine and Jim Otto – “00” himself was the central fusion point of their offense back in the 1960s and 70s. This Otto game worn jersey is from the 1965 AFL All-Star Game. The design is simplistic with the front and the verso looking identical. Although, the front features a distinct tail manufacturer’s tag in Spanjian – [size 52]. Spanjian was made in Pasadena, California. The shoulders feature four small white stars in a diamond pattern sewn on a blue yoke. There’s extra material on the elbows for protection. Otto’s jersey number is also identified “00” on the front in back via sewn on numerals.
Overall, it shows some single-game use with thread fraying on the identifiers which was just enough to get the job done back in the day. There’s also blue ink transfer from the yokes present. It doesn’t detract from the aesthetic as it was most likely from washing. Otto signed the back numbers in silver paint pen with a “00” inscription and the notations, “Game-Used” – “All-Star”. Interestingly during the signing, Otto noted that most players back then returned the jerseys after the game to the equipment manager.
Not many of these are out there. All we know of are “two”.. Seriously! Yes.. only 2 known to exist. Recently, a blog post showed a photo of Lance Alworth with his jersey from 1965. We present it as a photo style match to this one. Overall, a solid gamer for any Raidas fan who enjoys football and history.
