1965 New York Harlem Saturns Boxing-Style Basketball Poster

SKU: 35222 Category:

Throughout the 1950’s and ’60s, many barnstorming teams attempted to emulate and exploit the success of the Harlem Globetrotters, and each was able to muster a certain amount of renown and stability while playing in the shadow of the original organization, until the Trotters’ legal arm finally stepped in and shut down all pretensions mid-way through the 1960’s. The Saturns suffered this fate, but until put out of business by injunctions in 1966, did a brisk business around the world with collections of ex-All-Americans and Globetrotters, and NBA cast-offs and playground legends who could not (or would not) conform to the rigors and discipline of the NBA. Ironically, even their success was emulated with knock-off Saturns teams, and the club began adding “Original” to their moniker, as evidenced on this poster announcing the impending arrival of “The Greatest Basketball Show Around The World.” It documents a “Sat., Jan. 16 (1965)” game versus a high school faculty in “Clayburg, PA.” Measures 14″ x 22″ and features four-color graphics and text on heavy cardboard, projecting minimally EX/MT overall.
