1968 Santa Clara County Fair Broadside (Doors, Holding Company et al.)

“Turn on, tune in, drop out”. The year, 1968, witnessed the full force of the resistance movement – flower children – and “draft beer!, not students.” The venue was ideal, too – the Bay Area’s Santa Clara County Fair. Entertaining the patrons in that convulsive “happening” were the universally acclaimed musical prophets of the age – The Doors, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Taj Mahal, Ravi Shankar, The Youngbloods, Electric Flag, Country Joe [and the Fish], Kaleidoscope, and Big Brother & the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin, we assume). Though sponsored by the local government, the place was likely awash with pot and acid. In any event, this broadside survived the melee. It artistically (psychedelically) projects the spirit of the concert, highlighting by photo portrait the major star, Jim Morrison. The piece is printed on heavy-gauge paper and it measures 14″ x 21-1/2″. There are no stains or creases to report, but there are several tack holes in the perimeter, and there’s moderate damage in the lower left corner from water and a tack hole. A very visual piece, anticipating Woodstock, it’s about VG/EX.
