Description

The Kansas City Chiefs had a good luck charm in Cynthia Swanson. Bestowed with the label of team mascot, young Cynthia dressed in a specially-made Indian Princess dress and, along with the cheerleading squad, inspired the home crowds. As the story goes, Swanson was unable to attend Super Bowl IV (Jan. 11, 1970) which pitted the Chiefs against the Vikings. Kansas City prevailed in the game. This “The Duke” football was used in that game. Because of the “CC” notation (engraved beneath the MADE IN USA and near the laces) this ball was made in 1970. During the 1970 season, NFL team’s used footballs with a short Wilson notation and NFL in block lettering. This ball, given its “CC” reference, was manufactured in 1970 but not used during the regular season. In our estimation, this ball was produced very early in 1970 and used in the Super Bowl. The letter of authenticity, from Swanson, states that the Chiefs signed this ball after the Super Bowl and the ball was indeed used during the game. A number of the men who signed this ball were not on the Super Bowl IV roster so it may have also been signed by a couple members of the 1970 squad at a later date.

Each of the signatures is created in black felt tip and averages “7” in quality. Those who signed include: Jim Tyrer, Sid Smith (1970-72), Curley Culp, Robert Holmes, Ed Podolak, Ed Budde, Norris Stroud, Mo Moorman, Warren McVea, Willie Lanier, Willie Mitchell, Gloster Richardson, Bob Stein, James Marsalis, Mike Livingston, George Daney, Frank Pitts (faint), Len Dawson, Jerry Mays, Dave HIll, E.J. Holub, John Huarte, Bobby Bell, Jack Rudnay, David Hadley, Jim Kearney, Buck Buchanan, Emmitt Thomas, Otis Taylor and others.
