1969 Nate Colbert Game-Worn Padres Flannel Jersey (San Diego’s First Season; w/City Anniversary Patch)

Back problems pre-empted slugging 1st baseman Nate Colbert from becoming a bona fide Major League superstar, but he was certainly the signature player for the inaugural 1969 Padres club, and the best player they rostered in their first five years of competition. His banner year was ’72, when he belted 38 homers with 111 RBIs. His three All-Star game appearances all came in a Padres uniform, and in ’69 he hit .255 with 24 homers and 66 RBIs.

How difficult is it to capture an inaugural season flannel? – one that’s in a complete and original state, and worn by the team’s best player? Exceedingly…but offered here is an immaculate Nate Colbert road Padres representation from that inglorious 52-110 1969 campaign. The tan cotton flannel is tailored with a seven-button front and a uniquely fonted "San Diego" in brown felt on gold tackle twill. Colbert’s #17 on the verso appears in the same styling, and both have the expected ever-so-slight fading of the felt top portion of the identifier. The jersey features extra length, as would be expected on a Colbert jersey, and the Wilson size 42 label in the lower left front tail is perched atop a brown chain link "1969" identifier. The inner collar bears a flannel swatch with “N Colbert” stitched in brown chain link. Both the inner collar and tail identifiers are in perfect condition. The crowning grace in this masterpiece, however, is discovered on the left sleeve where the rare and highly treasured San Diego 200th Anniversary patch is zigzag affixed in resplendent gold, black and brown. Call it a perfect 10 and asterisk that “10” because of the rarity, the inaugural season, and the presence of a rarely seen commemorative patch.
