In every sport, there are a few game jerseys which differentiate themselves from the rest of the pack and command the highest price.
In baseball, it&rsquo,s Ruth, Mantle, Aaron, Koufax, Mays, DiMaggio and Gehrig. In hockey, it&rsquo,s Orr, Gretzky, and Howe. In basketball, it&rsquo,s Jordan, Wilt, Russell, Oscar, Mikan, Cousy, West and &ldquo, the Pistol.&rdquo, In football, Jim Brown, Unitas, Alworth, and Butkus, head most lists, with Brown and Unitas the clear leaders.
Beyond the magic of the player, the shirt’s beauty and its rarity, styling will usually dictate if the jersey hits the stratosphere.
For example, a &rsquo,64 road Alworth with sewn on lightning bolts and triple color sewn on numerals will far out distance its &rsquo,67 tear-away counterpart with screened on identifiers, no sleeve numbers, and no name plate. A heavyweight sewn on Butkus will create a fuss, a mesh version or tear-away will not.
AMI is proud to present this heavy durene Baltimore Colts road jersey worn by legendary QB Johnny Unitas during the Colts&rsquo, 1970 Super Bowl season.
Yes, it represents an aging Unitas in the 15th of his 18 seasons but 1970 was his last great season. It was also the first time he wore his name on the jersey back and was the only season he extensively wore an NOB in the beautiful durene material.
The jersey body is a magnificent durene in an off white cream hue. It sports Unitas&rsquo, trademark three-quarter length sleeves with oval elbow reinforcements in proper position.
The Colts&rsquo, famed 3-stripe shoulder pattern appears as a 3½,&rdquo, insert with embedded royal/white/royal stripes.
The numerals are sewn on in royal blue tackle twill, the font style, twill weight, sheen level, size, positioning, and affixing of which are exactly correct.
Of note are the lack of cerafs in the font style which Sand Knit did away with when they took over the contract from Mac Gregor after the &rsquo,67 season. Also noteworthy are the sleeve numbers which feature &ldquo, flat top ones&rdquo, and the horizontally dominant layout of the #9&rsquo,s.
The tail sports dual Sand Knit labels, the top identifying AFC Colts&rsquo, Exclusivity and the lower of the two designates size (46) and washing instructions. Both are straight stitch affixed, unaltered, and original. The NOB &ldquo,U-N-I-T-A-S&rdquo, is sewn on in royal blue tackle twill utilizing Sand Knit&rsquo,s classic 2¾,&rdquo, plain block font. The durene plate straddles the major horizontal transverse seam in proper position.
All alpha numeric identifiers exhibit a consistent stitch pattern and consistent surface softness. As for overall wear, it can be termed quarterback perfection. The inner and outer collar areas show light sweat stains and there is a blood stain on the white portion of the left shoulder stripe. The labels are well puckered and the plate edge stitching is well worn with slight fraying.
Johnny U. has autographed the jersey front and back, the penmanship as beautiful as one of his lengthy tight spirals..
Unitas lead the 1970 Colts&rsquo, to the AFC East Championship with an 11-2-1 record. Baltimore then shut out Cincy 17-0 in the divisional playoff behind two Unitas TD passes, and beat Oakland in the AFC championship game 27-17 as Unitas clinched the game with a 68 TD pass to Ray Perkins.
Both games were at home in frigid weather and the Colts&rsquo, wore their blue durenes. For the Super Bowl vs. Dallas on Jan. 17, 1971, the Colts&rsquo, wore white but broke out new mesh jerseys with screened on numerals in preparation for the heat of Miami&rsquo,s Orange Bowl.
Unitas would go three of nine for 88 yards and a TD in 1½, quarters before leaving the game with a rib injury. The Colts&rsquo, went on to win 16-13 on Jim O&rsquo, Brien&rsquo,s &ldquo,Super Kick&rdquo, to provide Unitas with his only Super Bowl ring.
What more can be said? A blood-stained durene with a name on back from a Super Bowl season of the greatest quarterback the game has ever known.
Call it a 10 and place it in that stratosphere category where it belongs. Johnny U. and this fabled Colts&rsquo, jersey transcend time.
