Description
Johnny Bench is widely regarded as baseball’s all-time greatest backstop. While others may have slugged more home runs or lasted a little longer, nobody left such an indelible mark on the game like the man who fueled the Big Red Machine in the mid ’70s. This pair of Rawlings turf shoes was worn by the catcher when he was leading those Reds to conquest. The laces have been removed from both. Soft rubber spikes suggest these were worn on the turf – pre-dating “turf shoes” as such. Dirt is caked into the left shoe, and both show moderate use. A Rawlings tag appears on the front of the extended tongue. “5” has been markered on the red Rawlings tag of both shoes, as well as on the inside Rawlings shoe insert. Bench placed a perfect signature (“10”) in silver paint pen on the right shoe.
