1970s Tom Rafferty Game-Worn Cowboys Jersey Also Worn By Jim Arneson

This Cowboys heavy cotton hybrid jersey had an interesting journey through the wars of NFL line play. Originally made in the late 60’s and sporting a 60’s Southland label with a [size] “50” flap tag, it probably wasn’t numbered until c. ’73-’74 when guard/center Jim Arneson wore #64 with royal blue, heavy plastic appliqué identifiers. The original nameplate was removed (remnants remain) upon Arneson’s departure.

In 1976, a fixture at guard and center moved into the Dallas O-line and anchored the pass protection for the next 14 seasons. His name was Tom Rafferty and he became synonymous with blocking excellence for the likes of Preston Pearson, Tony Dorsett, and Danny White. That Rafferty’s NOB appears on a mesh plate should not be alarming. This material style would serve as a cold weather jersey in the late 70’s, and mesh plates, which predominated on most jerseys, were often installed on the non-mesh heavyweights for use in a few “cold weather” games each season. The overall wear is medium, the cerafed numerals are present, the odd nameplate has merit, and Rafferty was a fixture in the Cowboy’s offense for 14 seasons.
