1971 Carlos May Game-Worn White Sox Flannel Jersey
Out of stock
No telling how great Carlos May could have been. In his,ten seasons, he batted .274 with 90 homers, 85 stolen bases, and two All-Star appearances. He did so playing the majority of his career without most of his left thumb, which was lost in a Marine Reserves accident in 1969. This 1971 red pinstripe marked the final season in flannel for the ChiSox and the first year of the new color scheme of red and white. It also marked the end of a decade-long run with player names on the back, the verso decorated instead with oversized 9-12,&r, two-color red/white numerals. The red pinstripe’s zipper is functional, although the pull lever has become disengaged. The interlocking “SOX”, logo and Mays’ #17 appear on front, while “MAY”, appears in red chainlink on a cream flannel swatch in the inner collar. A red, white, and baby blue “SOX”, disc patch decorates the left sleeve, and a Wilson size 44 label, positioned in the left front tail, is accompanied by a red chainlink identifier (1971-Set 2). Devoid of any moth holes or surface blemishes, the jersey rates “10”, in composition, features, originality, and softness of wear, duly representing a Southside favorite of the 1970s, Carlos May.
