1973 Fernando Gonzalez Game-Worn Pirates Jersey w/Clemente Memorial Patch & Player Letter

Description
The world’s loss of Roberto Clemente stung Fernando Gonzalez particularly hard. When Gonzalez rose to the majors in 1972, the future Hall of Famer took him under his wing. The fellow Puerto Rican even gave Gonzalez a piece of luggage to help him get acclimated. Clemente’s personal luggage is in this AMI auction.
Clemente was killed in a plane crash on December 31, 1972. The Bucs paid tribute to their leader when they wore special circular patches in 1973. According to one jersey source, this was the first time a team used something other than black armbands to memorialize a deceased player.
This size "40" Rawlings-made pullover was worn by Gonzalez in 1973. Accentuating the left sleeve end is a circular "21" patch. Worthy of special mention is the ribbed neck-trim (black and gold) on front. "Pirates" is displayed across the front as is "37". Each of the identifiers is expressed in two-color tackle twill. Secured in the rear tail is a Rawlings size "40" tag and "Set #8P 1972" flag tag. Amazing use is exhibited with heavy puckering and slight bleaching on the back numbers. Also included in this offering are durene leggings. Authentication is secured with a signed letter from Gonzalez.
