1976 Pele Game-Used Cosmos Jersey (w/LOA)

One thing is certain about Pele game-worn jerseys, there simply aren’t enough to go around. The Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods/Muhammad Ali of the soccer world reached iconic status – globally. Although never plentiful, many of Pele’s game jerseys are pertinent to his exhibition performances of the ’80s.

This size Champion "Medium" jersey was worn by Pele for home games – most likely in 1976.  In 1975 the Cosmos inked Pele to a deal as they persuaded him out of retirement. Accompanying the jersey is a signed letter of authenticity from David Clements, a Cosmos teammate of Pele’s in 1976. This naturally leads us to believe this jersey was worn that year. Clements mentions in his LOA that he received this from Pele after a match. (The team used jerseys manufactured by Umbo or Adidas, and usually with green collars, in 1977.)

The mesh pullover shows light overall use. All of the identifiers are heat-pressed. Green ribbing surrounds the V-neck and both sleeve ends. Situated in the collar is a size flag tag which matches the size of other known Pele exemplars from this period. Pele insisted on tighter jerseys to prevent the opposition from holding him.

Provenance, check. Style, check. Use, another check. There’s nothing missing on this rare Pele gamer.
