Description

Dan Devine is best remembered in Fighting Irish lore for the 1977 season during which coached his team and quarterback Joe Montana to a National Championship with a 38-10 Cotton Bowl win over the Texas Longhorns. The following day the Irish emerged as the #1 team in the final AP poll, earning their seventh National Championship in the 42 years of the AP poll.

Presented is a 1977 Notre Dame Cotton Bowl Championship ring. The gold plated ring, designed by Balfour, features a black stone on the front displaying the gold letters “ND.” The phrase “National Champions” surrounds the stone in raised-relief letters. The left shank displays an image of the school’s leprechaun mascot, above which is lettered “1977 Cotton Bowl,” and below, “Fightin’ Irish.” A banner surrounding the mascot displays the score of the Cotton Bowl game, “Notre Dame 38 – Texas 10.” The right shank features an image of the cupola of the campus chapel and a football. Above the image is the name of the possible recipient, “HEAVENS” (as Jerome Heavens is the possible attribution). The interior of the ring is coded SA 144254-8″ and it weighs in at 22.6 grams. Ring shows wear throughout. Size: 11.
