After making the Seattle SuperSonics roster for the 1973–74 season as a reserve, Slick Watts played more frequently the following season and became a starter for the 1975–76 season. That season, he led the NBA in total assists, assists per game, total steals, steals per game, and made NBA All-Defense First-Team. He was the first player to lead the league in assists and steals in the same season.
In 1976, Watts also received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his outstanding service to the community. Watts’ career declined after 1976, however, and he retired from the league after six seasons, due to injury. He played 4½ years with the Sonics, half a season with the New Orleans Jazz, and one season with the Houston Rockets. He picked up the nickname “Slick” because he was one of the first players to shave his head, unusual at the time. He was also known for wearing his headband off-center.
Presented is a Slick Watts game worn road purple jersey and shorts from 1977-78. The Jazz were principally a Sandknit team during the 1970’s but very late in the decade also used Champion. The jersey/trunks combo (rare in and of itself) is a hybrid uniform representing both manufacturers.
The jersey is a mesh pull-over style with green and yellow ribbing around the arms and neck openings. Showcased on the front is a screened-on funky “JAZZ” note with basketball logo is across the chest along with his number “00” below. It features screened on numerals with the sewn-on Name on Back removed. The rear back tail displays dual tags Champion [size] M and 2″ extra length. Of note, the sides were also customized to fit Watts’ slender frame. Overall, shows great wear.
Also preserved with the jersey and making the uniform complete, is a pair of game worn shorts. They match perfectly with the jersey and are a purple mesh with the same style yellow/green piping (elasticized) around the edges. They were made by Medalist Sand-Knit – Size (30) with a “00” jersey number patch tag sewn in for easy identification. They were used by Watts then later by an unidentified player because the trunks display the highly colorful NBA 35th Anniversary patch.
