Jim Rice’s borderline Hall of Fame stats probably won’t be enough to edge him into Cooperstown anytime soon, particularly because of his long-running and tempestuous relationship with the media, but he certainly was a major player in Red Sox Nation annals. This road gray jersey, from about 1980, comes with solid provenance and sports an interesting customization combination which precludes determination of its exact vintage. As for the matter of provenance, Robert Villegas worked as a visiting team batboy in the Oakland Coliseum from 1973 to ’78, and then worked the visiting clubhouse through the early ‘80s. His effervescent personality, and unqualified willingness to assist visiting players sometimes yielded him “game-used rewards,” including this Jim Rice road gamer. Today, Villegas can’t recall if it was the BoSox’s last visit in 1980, or ’81, when he was given this keepsake. But he does remember it being an afternoon game when Jim put one in the cheap seats. Fortunately, Baseball Reference shed light on the date – it was August 21, 1980, and Rice went two-for-four with a second-inning home run off Mark Langford, helping the Sox to a 5-1 victory.

The absolute year identification is impossible due to Rice’s tail customization. The entire tail was cut and hemmed just above the year swatch line, and BoSox roads from ‘’79-’81 bore Wilson tags and year swatches in the tail. The requisite features, however, remain – Wilson size 44 collar label, creamed-out cotton inner collar and button-path lining, and midnight navy identifiers. The wear is season-long solid and the garment represents one of the few documented Jim Rice jerseys known to survive.
