Philadelphia is about as passionate about its sports teams as any city in the nation. Mike Schmidt not only grabbed the hearts of Philadelphia, but he never let go. The life-long Phillie never swung his bat for any team other than the Phillies. Schmidt cranked his fourth career grand slam at Shea Stadium on April 22, 1980, and that ball is now offered. The ONL (Feeney) ball shows great use. True to form, whoever caught this ball was encouraged to throw it back onto the field, a virtual custom. After the ball was tossed back onto the field, it was retrieved and given to the mighty slugger. Schmidt eventually gave this ball to Bruce Wendell, a Senior Vice President of Promotions for Capitol Records. Schmidt and Wendell were life-long friends. PSA/DNA confirmed that the signature is Schmidt’s as is the lengthy inscription which reads “To Bruce April 22 1980 Grand Slam #4”. Also of note is that the ball comes from the same year which the Phillies won the World Series and Schmidt captured the NL MVP award. So basically, the ball is from Schmidt’s best year, and his team won the World Series. A photo of Wendell with Schmidt will be forwarded to the winner.
