Gene Banks went on to play six seasons in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls. He averaged 11.3 points per game spanning over 468 games in his professional NBA career. His career high of 44 points was achieved against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1983. He recorded his first NBA triple-double with the Chicago Bulls.
Presented is a jersey worn by Gene Banks during his time with the Chicago Bulls. It is a white mesh home jersey that is a rare style for the era. The front tail is tagged Sand Knit, Exclusive Chicago Bulls Tag, and 3” LB. Size 44. “Bulls” along with his number“20” are pressed in appliqué on front in red with black trim, with the collar and arms trimmed in red, white and black. His name (in red letters, no trim) is on the reverse above his number.
Banks only played two seasons with Bulls so by process of deduction this jersey dates to the 1986-87 season. That season the Bulls switched from Rawlings to Sand Knit and the addition of the NBA logo debuted in the league. It was autographed on the front by Banks and dated ’86 for the season which also added “1st NBA – Triple – Double.”
The provenance letter showcases that the jersey comes direct from Gene Banks and it reads:
“This is a letter of authenticity of the jersey wore by “Gene Banks” – former NBA All-Star of the Chicago Bulls.
I, Gene Banks, former NBA & Chicago Bulls forward/guard, do solemnly swear and give full creditability of this uniform jersey, worn by me, during my tenure and playing time with the Chicago Bulls, NBA professional basketball club. – Gene Banks”
