1986 Mike Ditka “Coach of Year” Presentation Award (1985 Super Bowl)

SKU: 26687 Category:

Before passing away in 1983, Poppa Bear Halas handed the mantel of his beloved Bears to one of his former players, Mike Ditka, and Iron Mike proceeded to mold a champion out of a team which had gone 81-124-1 under four coaches since 1967. He built it around a crushing defense, mirroring the 1963 Championship team, and by ’84, the Bears led the NFL in rushing and overall defense. An 11-4 run between 1983 and early 1984 went sour when QBs McMahon and Fuller fell to injuries in the same month, but in 1985, Ditka & Company – Da Bears -would

roll to a 12-0 start, outscoring November opponents 104-3, and ironically lose their bid for perfection to the Miami Dolphins. Under Ditka, that dominating ’85 squad set numerous regular season, playoff, and Super Bowl records, and was arguably the finest defense, and perhaps finest team, in NFL history. That legendary season had few rivals and no doubt awards came fast and furious to Big Mike, but few could have meant as much as this plaque, from his hometown Beaver Valley Coaches Association – that’s Beaver, P-A, incubator to Namath, Montana, Marino and dozens of other hard-scrabble professional legends and Hall of Famers.

Dated “March 8, 1986”, this highest-quality trophy eloquently states: “It Is With Honor and Great Pride That We Extend Our Recognition to – MICHAEL DITKA – Head Coach of The Chicago Bears, Super Bowl XX Champions, NFC Coach of the Year, Beaver County Native.” More etched flowery prose follows and is offered with obvious heartfelt hometown pride. This is an elaborate hand-rendered award featuring heavy blue enameling on brass, double-mounted on brushed blue velvet, and framed to 12″ x 14″ in heavy walnut. Impressive and significant on a number of levels, and attributible to one of the greatest seasons in professional sports history. NM.
