1989 was just another in a long line of vintage years for one of the NFL’s greatest aerial artists. Dan Marino “ONLY” put 3,997 yards on the board during that season, making it “ONLY” the seventh best yardage year of his illustrious 16-year career. Other than Foust, Moon, Bledsoe, Favre and Young, no QB has ever thrown for over 4,000 yards more than once. Marino did it six times, excluding this 1989 season near miss at 3,997.

This white Dan Marino game-used jersey, the style of which was used both at home and on the road, is emblematic of that ’89 season. Made by Wilson, it marked the first of many seasons that the club used Wilson uniforms, and the first time since the old AFL days when Wilson was the principal supplier. The highly sheened mesh jersey features screened-on identifiers in their entirety, inclusive of Dolphins’ sleeve logos, triple-color numerals, and single-color, uniquely fonted circular block NOB. Of note are the custom-cut sleeve ends showing a single aqua stripe, a customized, extended right sleeve opening, and an orange “W” Wilson left sleeve logo. A Wilson Prestige label (partially disengaged) and a size 48 flag tag appear in the jersey bottom. As would be expected, the jersey demonstrates undesignated 4”-6” of extra length.

The jersey is autographed on the back numeral in bold black felt tip. It illustrates appropriate QB wear with light pilling and puckering of the underarm and side support spandex panels. Overall, a quality early-career Marino gamer when he once again lit it up for about “four large minus a few pennies!”
